DID YOU KNOW?
The rose is the official National Floral emblem of the United States. This legislation was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on October 7, 1986 during a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden.
The rose is native to the United States.
Roses are amongst the best drought tolerant plants for your garden.
Tonkadale carries top quality greenhouse grown bud and bloom roses at the peak of perfection for Mother’s Day weekend.
Selections we carry are grown at a Minnesota local, Bailey Nursery. We carry favorite tea and floribunda varieties as well as winter hardy shrub and climbing roses. Our selections are based on top performance. We take into consideration, flower color, disease resistance, fragrance, and bloom time.
Growing Roses Is Easy
With Tonkadale

Floribunda = Beautiful clusters of flowers. Overall toughness to heat, wetness, pests, disease, etc., and the thicker and bushier growth habit. The only thing they lack is bloom quality — they often don’t have the fragrance or the form of a Hybrid Tea, but cultivars can be found that have just as much fragrance.
Grandiflora = Similar to Floribundas in that they usually bloom in clusters and their rebloom is good, but they share in the good bloom form of Hybrid Teas; unfortunately many of them also share in the lack of durability that Hybrid Teas are inclined to have.
Hybrid Kordesii = This rose is bred from the 'species' Rosa Kordesii. Lots of little pink single blooms. This was a rose produced by the hybridizer Kordes in Germany. It is always in bloom all summer long.
Hybrid Tea = Are the world's most popular type of rose by choice due to their color, fragrance and bloom form. With their long stems, it gives them the advantage, over others, as cut flowers. Typically for warmer climatess, these roses require more care as thay will need to be dug-up and burried during our cold winters.
Hybrid Teas are a cultivar group of roses, created by cross-breeding two different types of roses, initially by hybridising Hybrid Perpetuals with Tea Roses. Hardier than the Teas but less hardy and less ever-blooming than the Hybrid Perpetuals.
Shrub Roses = If you want adorn your garden with a collection of hardy roses, you will probably be looking at shrub roses. It is a diverse "catch-all" characterization for rose hybrids bred to survive well in cold weather and resist diseases.

William Baffin No Need To Pamper Shrub Roses
Shrub Roses unlike the tea roses and hybrids needn't but maybe a trim here or there. They can survive in difficult soil conditions and not much spraying or fertilizing.
The versatility of a shrub rose can be as low as a carpet, be used as a climber to adorn a trellis, as an ornamental hedge, a tree topiary or as a potted plant. Their beautiful blooms come in a splendid spectrum of shapes, from simple single-petal blossoms to large cauliflower clusters. They bloom from spring until fall and require little watering, perfect for the drought season.
Tonkadale is well known for our abundant rose selection. Pick-up one of our many shrub roses we carry. (Out the East double doors of the greenhouse)
By some estimates, the Japanese Beetle is the most devastating pest in the urban landscape. They can turn a beautiful garden landscape into a nightmare overnight. You may have recently noticed an influx of this pest. It was introduced to the United States from its native Japan in 1916. Without a natural predator, it has increased in population and has become a serious pest in the Midwest.
However, There Is Hope…
Tonkadale recommends Bonide’s Japanese Beetle Bagger.
